Bringing Poetry and Community Together for Seniors in NYC
At The Open Circle, we embrace the transformative power of connection, creativity, and community support. Our story began with our founder, Ria Shivam, who worked in Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright's office. Observing older adults passing their time by shredding paper or asking simple questions, Ria noticed how often they stood around for hours, striking up conversations with employees but ultimately feeling disconnected. This experience made her realize the urgent need for a welcoming space where older adults in New York City could gather, share their stories, and engage with one another.
Understanding that many seniors face social isolation and legal challenges, we set out to create a nurturing environment that encourages both community connection and cognitive engagement through poetry. Our mission is deeply personal: we empower older residents to express themselves, forge connections, and celebrate the joy of their unique voices.
At our poetry events, we not only honor creativity but also provide crucial resources and support for those who may feel overwhelmed. Every poem shared and every story told brings us closer to building a vibrant, supportive community tailored for our cherished seniors, making each encounter meaningful and impactful.
